There is a popular story about Bharat Kund located in Nandigram, 15 kilometers away from Ayodhya, that when Lord Shri Ram went on exile for 14 years, Bharat ji did penance at this place for 14 years till his return. When Lord Shri Ram returned from exile, he met his brother Bharat at this place. It is also believed that in Nandigram itself, Shri Ram had built a pond for the Pind Daan of his father King Dashrath, which is today known as Bharat Kund. This is the reason why this place is also known as ‘Chhota Gaya’. In the month of Pitru Paksha, a large number of devotees come here for Pind Daan.
Bharat Kund is the place where Bharat and Hanuman ji also met. It is also believed that when the coronation of Lord Shri Ram was to take place, Bharat ji had brought water from 27 places of pilgrimage. He poured half the water in the well built in Chitrakoot and the remaining water in the well built in Bharat Kund. This well is still there at this place. There is also a centuries-old banyan tree near this well, for which it is said that if we look carefully at its branches, we can see the pictures of the gods.
