Valmiki Temple
This temple built by Valmiki Samaj is dedicated to Maharishi Valmiki Ji. The famous Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi had called for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan from here on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2 October 2014. Mahatma Gandhiji spent 214 days here during his stay in Delhi from 1 April 1946 to early 1947. Maharishi Valmiki ji was born in the Naga race. Before becoming Maharishi, Valmiki ji was known as Ratnakar. He used to do banditry to support his family. Once he met Shri Narad Muni in a deserted forest. When Ratnakar ji tried to rob him, he asked Ratnakar ji, why do you do this work? Ratnakar ji replied that to support his family. Shri Narad ji asked whether your family members will support you in facing the punishment for the sin you will commit as a result of this act? Shri Ratnakar ji replied that he did not know. Shri Narada Muni said to go and ask him. Then Shri Ratnakar ji tied Shri Narad Rishi to a tree and went home and asked his wife and other family members whether they would support him in punishing him for the sin resulting from banditry, then everyone clearly refused. Then Shri Ratnakar ji returned to Shri Narad Muni and narrated all this incident to him. On this Shri Narad Muni ji said, O Ratnakar, if your family members do not want to be your partners in sin, then why do you commit this sin for them? Hearing this, Shri Ratnakar ji became disgusted with his banditry and asked Shri Narad Muni ji for the solution to salvation. Shri Narad Muni ji instructed him to chant Ram-Ram. Shri Ratnakar ji sat at a secluded place in the forest and started chanting Ram-Ram, but due to ignorance, he started chanting Mara-Mara instead of Ram-Ram. After many years of rigorous penance, ants made anthills all over his body, due to which he was named Valmiki. Pleased with his rigorous penance, Shri Brahma ji imparted knowledge to Shri Ratnakar ji and ordered him to compose Ramayana. By the grace of Shri Brahma ji, he came to know about all the events of Ramayana before time and he composed Shri Ramayana. In time he became a great sage.
